Harriet Tubman Village Charter School strongly believes that social-emotional learning and support is an integral part of their students’ success. In addition to having two school counselors on campus, Tubman also works together with various mental health community partners to bring programming to their very diverse population. These supports are offered to groups of students, individual students, and guardians.
Tubman currently works with two different mentorship programs that provide support groups to their middle school population. These groups are offered to students weekly students and require student willingness and a parent permission slip to attend. The 6th-8th-grade boys who want to be part of a group go to “Boys To Men.” Boys to Men Mentoring is a nonprofit organization that is committed to creating communities of dedicated men who are able to guide and support at-risk boys on their journey to manhood. They have a proven approach to producing real change within young men by listening, encouraging, and empowering them in a group environment.
This month Tubman will be piloting a younger version of this program for 3rd-5th-grade boys. Parents will be receiving more information about this program sometime during the month of March. The 6th-8th-grade girls who want to be part of a group go to Girls Inc., a mentorship program for adolescent girls. Girls Inc. focuses on guiding girls to achieve their goals and aspirations despite the unique challenges that they face.
The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips the girls in this group to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Currently, the 7th-grade Girls Inc program is run by a Girl’s Inc. educator, Ms. Rosa. The 6th and 8th-grade groups are run by our very own school counselor- Ms. Mariotti. Ms. Mariotti is proudly the first school counselor in San Diego to partner with this agency by teaching the curriculum herself at her home school.
If an individual student requires long term counseling support Tubman counselors can connect them to two wonderful agencies in the Rolando area- Cornerstone and SAY, San Diego. Cornerstone Mental Health Clinics is designed to meet the mental health needs of children ages 5-17 who are Medi-cal eligible or without insurance in San Diego County, by providing individual family group and psychiatric services at the school, home, or clinic.
Tubman families enjoy this agency because their counselors can come to the school to deliver services. SAY San Diego is very similar where it services to address the comprehensive needs of the entire individual or family. SAY works with systems such as law enforcement, schools, and local government to create positive change.
Lastly, Tubman understands that as a school they also need to socially- emotionally support the hard-working guardians in their community. In October Tubman invited the San Diego Positive Parenting Program to lead a three-session parent information class at their school. The Positive Parenting Program (PPP) helps parents in San Diego County find positive solutions to common childhood behavior issues using strategies proven by more than 35 years of research.
The curriculum is based on Triple P, an evidenced-based program that has been shown to promote family harmony, reduce parent-child conflict, foster successful peer relationships, and prepare children for successful experiences at school. The Tubman parents who attended these classes raved about the invaluable information they acquired. This company will be invited back next year to share even more fun creative ways Tubman guardians can work with their children.
